Managed to find quite the info dump from an old Jane's article which talks about the OTO Melara OF-40/120 Mk 2A in a bit more detail, first of all it confirms that this was based on the original Ariete turret but modified and made shorter. It does not say why it was made shorter but it does say that it was based on the original OF-40 but with an upgraded engine. There was also some provisional specs attached which are useful although likely provisional considering this vehicle seemingly was never made.
