그래서 새로운 주가 연방에 가입하려면 헌법을 개정하는 게 일반적임.
아래는 잘 알려진 몇몇 연방국들의 헌법에 구성체들의 이름을 명시한 조항들을 가져온 거임.
그런데 미국이나 멕시코의 경우에는 헌법에 구성체들의 이름을 명시한 조항이 없었음.

독일 기본법
전문
신과 인간에 대한 책임을 의식하고, 통일 유럽에서 동등한 권리를 가진 구성원으로서 세계평화에 이바지할 것을 다짐하며, 독일 국민은 헌법제정권력에 의하여 이 기본법을 제정한다.
바덴-뷔르템베르크, 바이에른, 베를린, 브란덴부르크, 브레멘, 함부르크, 헤센, 메클렌부르크-포어포메른, 니더작센, 노르트라인-베스트팔렌, 라인란트-팔츠, 자를란트, 작센,
작센-안할트, 슐레스비히-홀슈타인과 튀링엔 주의 주민은 자유로운 결정으로 독일의 통일과 자유를 성취하였다. 이로써 이 기본법은 전 독일 국민에게 적용된다.
스위스 헌법

6 Definitions
